REGENT`S PARK
Regent`s Park is situated in central London, in the Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster. The park is managed, by the Royal Parks, a government body.
Regent`s Park official title is, The Regent`s Park and has 487 acres of land for public use. The park`s history dates back to the period of King Henry VIII. The land had been previously the property of Barkin Abbey.
But during the period of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry claimed the land for the Crown. The park has been crown property ever since, except between 1649 and 1660. During these years, the land became a hunting park, called Marylebone Park.
In the year 1811, the lease of the land expired, and the Prince Regent commissioned the architect, John Nash to create a plan for the area. Nash`s original plans, was for a grand palace, with detached grand villas, for the Prince`s friends.
Work started in 1818 on Nash`s master plan, but the plans for the palace, and most of the villas were dropped. However, they did build the proposed terraced housing, which surrounds the fringe of the park.
The Regent Park plan, was vast, and included the creation of Regent Street and Carlton House Terrace. This grand terrace, would sweep from St James`s Park all the way to Parliament House.
Regent`s Park, opened to the public for the first time in 1845, initially for just two days a week. The park today is visited by millions each year, who stroll through gardens, or visit the Zoo. The park has a canal running through, that connects Regents Canal and Grand Union Canal.
Regents Park today, has also a wide, and diverse, range of gardens and lakes. A children`s playground and sport pitches, make this, a fun and family park. On the outskirts of the Southern part, are a group of buildings that contain the London Business of School, British American College of London, European Business and Webster Graduate School.
Primrose Hill can be found immediately to the North of the park, with stunning views of Westminster and the city of London. Primrose Hill is another, of London`s Royal Park`s, that is managed by the Royal Parks, a government agency. If you are visiting London in the future, many cheap hotels can be found near Regent`s Park.
