NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
The Natural History Museum of London was established in the year 1881, and has over 3 million visitors a year.
The museum is located on Exhibition Road, South Kensington. Also on Exhibition road, you will find the Science Museum, and the Albert and Victoria Museum.
London’s Natural History Museum is free to the public and open every day of the year, except 24-26 Dec. This museum can boast over 70 million items of life, earth species and science objects. The museum has become world renowned, for its work with taxonomy identification and conservation.
Most children always remember a visit to the museum for Dinosaurs though. The great hall and entrance is dominated, by the skeleton remains of a large Diplodocus. The museum has a large exhibition running currently, with many dinosaur parts, and moving robotic dinosaurs.
The museum was built by a man called Alfred Waterhouse, but it had been Captain Francis Fowke, whose design had originally been chosen. Fowke though died shortly after his design had been accepted, and Waterhouse took up the challenge. He made several changes, to Fowke’s original design, including the Romanesque style you see today.
The museum was also supposed, to have two large wings, but budget restraints did not allow these to be built.
Work first began on the museum in 1873. The builders used terracotta tiles, to compensate for the sooty conditions of Victorian London, looking closely you can see within the brick work many examples of flora, and fauna.
The museum was officially opened in the year 1881, but it was not until 1883 that all the objects were finally put in place. If you are thinking of visiting the museum, the closet tube station is South Kensington. From the station, a tunnel will take you very close to the entrance of the museum.
Although admission is free, some exhibitions may ask for a small charge. The museum opens from 10.00 am and last entry into the museum is 17.30, with guests ask to leave by 17.50. Those who need disabled access can find entrance on Museum Lane, north of the museum.
